A Values-Based Approach to Body Literacy

At Pearl & Thistle, our pre-teen and teen cycle programs are not overtly religious, but these materials are rooted in values that matter:

✅ Menstrual cycles are a vital sign for girls’ and women’s health. Just like heart rate or blood pressure, cycles provide key insights into a girl’s well-being.

✅ Preserving and restoring natural body function is better than just managing symptoms. Understanding cycles helps girls make informed health choices that support their bodies rather than just masking irregularities.

✅ All girls deserve accurate information about what’s going on in their bodies. Misinformation leaves girls confused and disempowered. This workshop provides the truth—clearly and compassionately.

✅ Girls should never be ashamed or embarrassed about the healthy function of their bodies. A girl’s cycle isn’t something to dread—it’s a normal, natural part of being human.

✅ We don’t have to love our periods to respect them as part of our body’s design. Girls deserve the freedom to understand and appreciate their cycles, even if they don’t always like them.

✅ Each person has inherent dignity, and our bodies are an essential part of that. Whether you see this as imaging God or simply as part of what it means to be human, a girl’s body is an inseparable part of who she is. Teaching her to respect and understand it is an act of dignity.

To ensure that all presenters align with our key values and licensing terms, we require individuals and organizations to complete a short approval process before purchasing the Cycle Charting for Girls Presentation Packet.

Submit an Application

Applicants must complete a brief application form confirming their agreement to:

  • Use the materials solely for live presentations, workshops, or retreats (this presentation may not be recorded or packaged for resale).
  • Maintain the integrity of the content and branding.
  • Adhere to the brand consistency guidelines, ensuring the materials are not presented alongside content contrary to Catholic moral teaching on sexuality, gender, marriage, or family planning.

What age is this best for?
The presentation packet includes options for delivering the Basic charting section (for girls within the first 2-3 years of cycling) or the Advanced charting section (for girls who are older!)... or both! You get to decide which age group you will serve with your events. The Leader Kit includes some planning considerations to help you figure that out!
Can I use a different book than Cycle Charting for Girls?
This presentation is built around the materials in Cycle Charting for Girls—every participant will need to have her own copy; however, additional resources may also be used to round out your workshop and/or retreat as long as they meet the terms of the user license.
Do I have to pay for books for my workshop participants?
The Leader Kit comes with bulk purchasing discounts if you want to order books and include them as part of your workshop fees or sell them to participants during your event. However, you can also simply notify participants that they will need to purchase the book in advance if that is better for your community.
Do I have to pay an annual license?
No! This is a one-time purchase of a presentation license. It's an up-front investment for sure, but there are no limits on how many times you can give this presentation and as long as you continue to uphold the terms of the licensing agreement (spelled out in the application), then you can keep your license with no ongoing fees!
What charting method does this teach?
This book doesn't teach a formal NFP method; it offers a simplified approach to charting with cervical fluid and/or basal body temperature to identify cycle patterns (in the Basic section) and ovulation (in the Advanced section)
Does this presentation explain how to use NFP?
No; this presentation is about teaching girls to chart for self-knowledge and health. It incorporates biomarkers for identifying ovulation in the "Advanced' portion, but does not include calculations for fertility at any point.
How is this different from other charting programs?
There are many wonderful charting programs available, some of which you may already be licensed to deliver! The benefit of this program is that it's a beautiful, bite-sized (but really comprehensive!) introduction to charting that requires only a one-time commitment for presenters and participants. This program could easily be used as an introduction to other more-intensive or ongoing services that you offer.
Does this presentation talk about the different types of birth control?
This presentation gives a brief explanation of why doctors sometimes recommend synthetic hormones "aka birth control" for period and cycle symptoms. It discussed the mechanisms of these different options and shows how they are different from a natural cycle. The concept of bio-identical hormones and taking hormones cooperatively with cycles is mentioned. A list of some RRM providers is also included.
Is this only for girls?
This is a cycle charting program, so the intended audience are girls! However, you may decide that you want to present this material to parents, educators, or other adult peers to help them better understand teen cycles. That is up to you!
Can I see a copy of the license terms?
The application form includes the licensing terms, and basic info about branding guidelines.
What is Discord?
